悲慘世界的音樂劇來到台灣巡演，雖然數十年前就看過這個音樂劇，但是因為沒有字幕，所以不能融入劇情，這次因為清楚的國語字幕，除了深深受到音樂的感動外，對於悲慘世界又多了一層體會。什麼是善？什麼是惡？顯然與立場與角度有關。男主角尚萬強因為姊姊的小孩沒有食物吃而偷了一塊麵包，構成偷竊罪，是無疑的，但是最善良的心卻為何不是受到珍惜與讚揚卻反而受到處罰呢？用盡一生追捕尚萬強的員警賈維爾，始終深信尚萬強是個十惡不赦的大壞蛋，但被尚萬強救了一命後，對於自己深信的法律與正義，一夕崩解，他再也無法善盡他的職守，因而投河。一個執法的人再也不能忠於法律時，他將以何種信仰存在世上呢？對於賈維爾的處境，這次我有了新的體悟。雨果對於各種人物的立場刻畫深刻，而且感人，讓人不禁想手握一本《悲慘世界》細細閱讀。或許這個世界只是善良的人的修煉場。
The musical Les Miserables has come to Taiwan for a tour. Although I have seen this musical decades ago, I could not immerse myself in the plot because there were no subtitles. This time, because of the clear Mandarin subtitles, in addition to being deeply moved by the music, I also gained a deeper understanding of Les Miserables. What is good? What is evil? Obviously, it is related to the standpoint and viewpoint. The protagonist Jean Valjean stole a piece of bread because his sister’s child had no food to eat. This constitutes the crime of theft, which is undoubtedly true, but why is the kindest heart not cherished and praised but punished instead? Javier, a policeman who has spent his entire life chasing Jean Valjean, always believed that Jean Valjean was an unforgivable villain, but after being saved by Jean Valjean, his belief in the law and justice collapsed overnight, and he could no longer fulfill his duties, so he jumped into the river. When a law enforcer can no longer be loyal to the law, what kind of belief will he live in the world with? This time, I have a new understanding of Javier’s situation. Hugo’s portrayal of the standpoints of various characters is profound and touching, which makes people want to hold a copy of “Les Miserables” and read it carefully. Perhaps this world is just a training ground for kind people to strengthen themselves.
